Congenital shortening of the lower limb with foot deformity
In this case, what has been carried out is an elongation of the leg with correction of foot deformities using the Ilizarov apparatus.
Congenital hemimelia the shortening of a lower limb, with deviation of the ankle and foot.
In this case, what has been performed was a correction of the ankle and foot, with simultaneous elongation of the leg.
Disease of the leg muscles
In this case the disease causes the deformity of the feet and results in great difficulty in walking, even with orthopaedic shoes.
The correction of the position of the twisted feet improves the patient’s ability to walk, making it also possible to wear normal footwear.
Metabolic bone disease
Hypophosphatemic vitamin D resistant rickets.
In this case what has been performed was the correction of the deformities and the elongation of the limbs.
Post-traumatic defect of the big toe (hallux)
In this case what has been obtained is the elongation of the big toe with the restoration of the sole of the foot and the relative balance.
Slowdown in the growth of the foot following trauma
In this case what has been obtained is the elongation of the big toe with the restoration of the sole of the foot and the relative balance.
Correction of leg deformities
The following are two examples of leg deformity corrections, thanks to the use of the Ilizarov external fixator.
The photos in this section show the situation before the surgical procedure and the final outcome.
Osseous infection – Osteomyelitis
The photos below show a case of osteomyelitis treated with the resection of the infected area and the subsequent application of the Ilizarov apparatus.
The patient has a segment of necrotic bone removed and the leg’s functionality was completely restored.
Pseudarthrosis of the forearm
This photos on this page relate to a procedure for correcting the pseudarthrosis of the forearm using the Ilizarov external fixator.
Pseudarthrosis of the humerus
The photos on this page are of a patient suffering from pseudarthrosis of the bone. They also show the outcome one month after the removal of the Ilizarov apparatus.
Pseudarthrosis of the femur
The following is the case of a 65-year-old patient suffering from a fracture to the right femur. After having undergone – without obtaining any benefit – three surgical procedures, in the following order:
Osteosynthesis with intramedullary rod;
Osteosynthesis with plate, breakage of the screws;
Plates and cement transplantation.
The patient resorted to the Ilizarov method, finally obtaining the welding of the fracture and restoration of the limb’s full functionality.
Severe deformity of the femur
Male – 13 years-of-age Outcomes of an epiphysiolysis fracture of the femoral condyle at 10 years-of-age. Valgus deformity of the femur and shortening by 2.5 cm.
Elongation of the femur
The photos in this section show a patient affected by a malformation of the left femur, which is 5.5 cm shorter than the right one.
Treated using the Ilizarov method, the patient completely regained anatomical functionality.
Treatment of Turner syndrome
This page presents the clinical case of a 17-year-old girl suffering from Turner Syndrome.
Thanks to use of the Ilizarov external fixator, the patient was able to overcome the deformity to her legs and regain correct posture.
Ollier Disease
The photos below show the procedures carried out on a 5-year-old patient affected by the shortening of her lower limb by 11 cm.
Elongation of the metatarsal bones
The case presented here is that of a 17-year-old female patient suffering from bilateral shortening of the fourth metatarsal in both feet.
The problem was solved thanks to the application of the Ilizarov fixator.
Ankle deformities
This section presents the case of a 15-year-old female patient suffering from bilateral deformities in both ankles.
The application of the Ilizarov external fixator restored harmony and a correct posture to the lower limbs.
Foot deformities as outcomes of trauma
The photos below show the procedure performed on a 41-year-old patient suffering from post-traumatic deformity of the foot.
The outcome makes it possible to assess the effectiveness of the Ilizarov external fixator also in those cases related to injuries that occurred several years before. In this case the trauma which led to the deformity happened six years before the procedure.
Arthrodesis of the knee
These pictures show the case of a 78-year-old patient with a failed knee prosthesis.
Thanks to the Ilizarov method the patient was able to overcome the pain, even though a light
varus deformity remained in his right knee.
Diminished growth of the foot as a result of trauma
In this case, lengthening of the shorter foot was carried out.
Post-traumatic defect of hallux of the foot
Congenital club foot
Disease of bone
Vitamin-D-resistant Hypophosphatemic rickets.
In this case, correction of the deformity, as well as limb lengthening were carried out.
Congenital shortening of the lower limb with foot deformity
In this case, lengthening of the leg and correction of foot deformity were carried out.
Leg muscle disease
Club foot was corrected, and the patient improved his ambulation to the point where he
